having recently played an eight hour set to a sold-out crowd at london’s oval space, the prolific dusky drop a trio of moody club tool tracks on 17 steps as they continue their european autumn/winter tour. a club tool in the most effective sense, lead track ’lydia’ is dark, nagging acid groover that builds and builds throughout its 6 hypnotic minutes. with all the melodic material based around the lydian scale, ‘lydia’ was originally inspired by a bizarre, trippy dream alfie had in which everything was all based on the lydian scale. a homage to classic techno, ‘bitter lake’ is a hard-hitting surge of looping, percussive energy and detroit-nodding rave stabs that build to a hoover-fuelled breakdown release. rounding off the trio, the brilliantly titled and uniquely composed ‘infinite libido’ again explores dusky’s more percussive tendencies and has been a regular feature in their dj sets for the past year.

american label beyond the speaker made an impression with their first release angels against dust two years ago, a tasty 12inch split between legowelt & willie burns. for the latest outing, canadian mastermind michael silver aka cfcf (rvng, ghostly, 1080p) celebrates the soul and grooves of house, electro, and techno. three tracks that balance dancefloor hustle, intricate detail and flourishing melodies. lead track head up is a poignant call to the dancefloor, a peak hour house cut with an emergent vocal sample that rallies all for a blissful groove excursion. the b-side is a moodier affair, with mossy wall submerging the listener with potent rhythms as ominous bass intersects with a waking metropolis of melody. and the classic techno sound of sea of love deftly lulls us with gentle vocals and a looping guitar phrase.

the second of two brilliant eps produced by merweyn saunder and eric lewis. although this was released under a different name, they were actually all done in the set of sessions that also gave us the previous release, the virgo four ep. as far as the duo were concerned m.e. was their name and virgo was imposed on them by someone at trax. the two eps were later conjoined and released as an album in the uk radikal under the name virgo. it was re released in 2010 by rush hour.

powder is a young producer raised in rural japan, now living in tokyo. she wakes daily at 6am, squeezes onto a packed subway and commutes to a bland office building where her day is consumed by the electronics industry — a banal world of blank stares, uniforms, data entry and soliciting phone calls. she cherishes her lunch break, a solitary hour of astral projection where her daydreams cull inspiration for another life, her nocturnal routine. at 9pm the day closes, as her co-workers flock to the izakaya for beers, powder rushes to her micro home-studio to exorcize her daily demons, constructing a tropical temple to house her immaculate vision. she slaves away, unabashed until sunrise, when her routine begins again, however, todays lunch break is an escape into her headphones where she will revisit her soundtrack inspired by lights, colors, hometown memories, and the imaginary worlds where the fruits of her labour will live.

after making a great impression with its first ep, giant records serves up a second hot helping of house music from boss man grant dell, complete with fresh remixes by scottish techno stalwarts silicone soul. dell, also known as chicago transit authority, has been doing his do for 25 years now. as a dj he is at home in clubs in ibiza and barcelona as well as around the rest of europe, and is someone who always prefers to push his own brand of widely infused and influenced music than his own profile. once again here he comes up trumps with the emotive, glowing house cut ‘in your mind’. with a neat bassline and mid tempo house drums, subtle but effective synth smears add warmth and colour to the groove, whilst soul fuelled vocals add a real sense of personality. this is sure to get people grooving at any hour and comes with grant’s own space echo remix. as the title suggests it’s a more dubby and reverb rich affair with cosmic signifiers and sci-fi vibes pervading from start to finish. silicone soul need little introduction having been at the heart of real deep house and techno for decades on the soma label. their first remix is a darkroom dub - named after their own label - and is a seductively slo-mo and lazily unfolding house cut with languid synths that really suck you in. their lush hypnohouse mix is then a twinkling, late night bit of melodically rich deep house with starry skies twinkling above sombre chords. this is a patiently served but hugely alluring ep that is stuffed with plenty of tender feeling. one again then, both grant and giant have come up with the goods.

dutch powerhouse creme organization started a brand new label entitled jericho one. the man behind the first ep is berlin based brit bnjmn, who has released on label like delsin and rush hour and has a strangely melodic, lo-fi sound. opener skur is a hurried techno jam with frosty textures and bleak industrial vibes. it sets the vibe for the total feeling of the ep which is way more floor facing compared to bnjmn s earlier productions. this is a truly out there and wild ep that once again finds bnjmn experimenting on the outer fringes of the techno world in his own unique, distorted way.

sheik ‘n’ beik are a nyc based cohort specialising in promotion, production and outletting left­of­centre slices of electronic music. with previous releases from family members derek marin, voiski and peter corvaia their 4th release comes courtesy of danny wolfers (a.k.a legowelt) working alongside rush hour regular xosar under their xamiga alias. with this being xamiga’s 3rd release, the pair draw for their trusted arsenal of analogue gear and offer up the ‘bohemian grove’ ep, a woozy brew of foggy textures, gently frazzled hats and detroit­indebted grooves. the title track kicks things off with glassy pads sat atop a long­tailed thud and a sandy shuffle. a distant bass groove wades in ahead of a passage of intricate, band­passed percussion and a circling synth line before ‘cumulus versie’ sets sheets of ethereal vocals and synth strings gently ducking under a taught analogue pulse. ‘midwest’ then sets hissing kicks and frayed hi­hats alongside a rasping bass tone. pitch­bent synth lines then bubble into focus before ‘blizzard’ sets a dystopian tone from the off. a stout kick drum thunders under minor­key chord shifts and a menacing sequence that works to round off another fine addition to the sheik ‘n’ beik series.

from ben thomas aka bnjmn comes an entirely new and different project, brack. following a string of excellent releases for the likes of rush hour and delsin, the berlin-based british producer has launched his own imprint. its inaugural release promises to simultaneously satisfy long-time listeners, and throw them for a loop.

originally recorded in london, june 1962 with robert farnon and his orchestra. this newly remastered re-issue comes on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl and includes a download code for the full album.

richard rogers black booby re-edits return with bb07, which sees chi-town original and ron hardy protégé gene hunt - a black booby veteran from bb04 - digging out more vintage dat dopeness on the double-a-side, which features raw-as-hell analogue house workout *1015* (a take on the dion & tony track from his chicago dance tracks collection on rush hour back in 2011) alongside the very aptly-named (and appropriately drum-fuelled) *dr roland*. meanwhile on the b-side you will hear uk house music og terry farley sharing production duties with another 90s house veteran, stuart stretch silvester. *play house* (original mix) is a synth-heavy jacking houser with serious dancefloor intent, plus check out the kklassik mix by another chi-town don, k alexi shelby, who chases the original headlong down a dark alley littered with emotive samples and thumping keys.

the dutch pinkman label is back with a new ep from xosar, who debuts on the label and covers release number 10. xosar is the berlin based, american born producer who has excelled on lies and rush hour with a unique, experimental sound that draws heavily on the hardware she uses as well as a live, freeform approach to arrangement. here she comes correct once more with two new cuts of mystic techno.

lux rec enters its fifth year of existence. a time of adventures in electronic sounds, exploring the margins and the darkest corners. to celebrate all victories and failures cosmo & faber compiled this release, the number 23, collecting material from old acquaintances and musicians that are new to the label.

nebraska is someone who’s tracks we’ve been loving for a good few years now and finally managed to pin him down for a release here on delusions of grandeur. the uk producer is something of an enigma, and despite some amazing releases on rush hour still remains resolutely underground and seems to keep his releases to a minimum, focusing on keeping the quality high rather than flooding the market with average material. once again, he brings the real deal with three drum-heavy warehouse jams to nice-up the dancefloor. aw-right (mute version) sets the tone with a raw house groove that keeps things stripped to the bare minimum. a bouncing bassline and rattling percussion break help to define the track but it’s the dusty, dubby approach to the mix which really makes the track shine. next up we have warp and weft, a similar sounding track but by dropping the bpm’s nebraska has created a sublime low-slung, bumpy groove to really move to. flipping over we’re treated to the brilliant eighty eights which will have you nodding your head like the churchill’s dog before you can say ‘looped up piano and bass one bar groove repeated for over eight and a half minutes shouldn’t work should it?’

nail provides the lead track for fofs latest vinyl only excursion - originally produced in the same time period as the classic tracks on the ode rammel reissue ep earlier in the year, glazed lay dormant on one of nails dats for many years before being rediscovered and given its first airing now on fof. chunky roughed up house beats are the order of the day here, a real peak time groove. new talent harry mccanna, resident at londons infamous undersound nights, debuts with act 1, a beautifully subtle bassline driven groove that rises above the pack with its super warm pad lending the track a warm and fuzzy hypnotic edge. romanian talent zece kicks off the flipside with the most contemporary offering, a breakbeat laden groove with a fx laden vocal snatch underpinned by that all important b-line whilst sonodab rounds things off with a beautifully deep and melodic slice of electro on brown study, the percussive elements giving rise to a hazy melodic pattern for those early hour excursions.

last few years have seen barac capturing the very soul of the romanian underground in a very productive yet very unreleased manner. few carefully selected tracks have been released while others are probably kept for the right moment. with his album on metereze running hot and a new label under his command barac is for sure the man of the hour. better yet, the man of the moment. for the first instalment of his new moment imprint he teams up with friend and fellow producer vincent iulian. these two go way back and they have a lot of history together. music wise they share the same passion for driving mysterious tech grooves and theory ep is all about that. in form is groovy and dark with a haunting synth accompanied by subtle xylophones. on the other side we take a dive in the atmospheric breaks grooves of in colour. uplifting and mysterious with the right amount of balls to keep you going.

finally the moment has arrived for us to release new original music on our own label! this monster release has a history that takes us back more than four years to a 48 hour studio session at our beloved marcy hotel in brooklyn, ny. the original collaborative effort came from a laundry list of familiar crew love players including soul clap s charlie and eli, wolf + lamb s gadi mizrahi, no regular play s greg paulus, the lovely deniz kurtel and even mr. fantastic himself, lee curtiss. after all was said and done the body and inspiration of the record was there but what was lacking was a strong vocal. enter robert owens, arguably one of the most prolific and sonically recognizable singers in house music period

it often said that all good things must come to an end, but it s especially satisfying when that end is a real high note. wed like to think thats the case with icee hot, as its five- year run as a party and a label is coming to a close this month, both with a 28­hour marathon goodbye event and with daddy issues, the latest ep from vin sol & matrixxman.
